A PHRASE TOO OFTEN HEARD

A lot of what we learn in the sports business world comes from what we pick up, whether it be via reading, listening or watching from industry sources. But I think some of the most important lessons, ideas, and thoughts come from our own personal experiences. It's just a matter of taking a step back, looking at the situation and analyzing how we can continue to improve.

Changing the Past is a Dangerous Game

University of Texas head football coach Mack Brown wants to see Vince Young receive the Heisman Trophy award for 2005 since the winner of the Heisman that season, Reggie Bush, has been ruled ineligible for the 2005 season after it was determined he received illegal benefits.

I understand Brown wanting to see his former player receive college football's highest individual honor, but if the Heisman Trophy Trust does indeed award the Heisman Trophy for 2005 to runner-up Vince Young in 2010 its going to set a precedent that is going to be very, very controversial.

Facebook Places Equals A Big Opportunity For Savvy Sports Marketers

Heads up sports marketers, this may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for. Now that Facebook has made its long anticipated entry into geo-location space, all of a sudden you have a very relevant new marketing vehicle to explore. But with Facebook Places and its 500 million users entering the arena, this contest may be over sooner rather than later.

Roger Clemens' High Stakes Poker Game

As I often say on Sports Business Radio, there are two courts that judge us - the court of law and the court of public opinion. While some marquee athletes have not been convicted in the court of law, they have been in the court of public opinion (see Tiger Woods and Ben Roethlisberger).

Roger Clemens pleaded not guilty today to a 6-count indictment including perjury charges today in Washington D.C.

LOOKING BEYOND THE OLYMPICS

If you were asked to name countries that have dominated international sports competitions in recent years, a lot of us would probably look first to medal and gold medal counts at recent Olympics. USA (36 Gold, 110 total in 2008), China (51 Gold, 100 total), Russia (23 Gold, 72 total) would probably come to your mind - Big countries which have the "Olympic athlete production factory".

Rossi and Ducati – Endorsement Deals Don’t Get Much Better Than This

Everyone has an opinion about who are the most passionate sports fans. You might think the answer lies somewhere in America - perhaps a college football or basketball team, but Italian motorsport fans have to rank pretty highly on the list.

Golf Killing Itself with Dumb Rules?

Sports have rules for a reason. They provide a framework to allow for organized competition. When enforced appropriately, they ensure fair and honest play. They keep athletes safe.

Golf, however, is killing itself with rules.
