Memorial Coliseum Site Looking Doubtful As Future Portland Triple-A Home
I've been digging around regarding the Memorial Coliseum site being utilized as the new home for a baseball stadium and the sense I am getting is that the Rose Quarter option is becoming less and less viable by the day for Merritt Paulson and his group. The Trail Blazers seem to be taking their time analyzing how the Rose Quarter should be developed and they are definitely not on the same timeline that Merritt Paulson needs to be on. To complicate matters there are some very vocal groups that don't want to see Memorial Coliseum torn down. And according to others I've spoken with these groups will make a push to make Memorial Coliseum a historic landmark which complicates tearing a building with such a distinction down. My guess is that the people opposed to tearing down Memorial Coliseum can tie this all up in court long enough to force Merritt Paulson and his group to search for another venue for his ballpark. And because PGE Park needs to be retrofitted for soccer only by MLS standards Paulson needs a different venue for his Portland Beavers baseball team as PGE Park will no longer be an option. So Paulson is up against the clock. Its a shame because I think the best site for a new ballpark is the Memorial Coliseum site and I also think the MC has seen its best days. Its time to tear it down and put up a very respectful shrine to the veterans on the rebuilt MC site. Its been 14 years since the Rose Quarter was built and I hope we soon see the day where the land is developed and it becomes the thriving vibrant area we all hoped it would be when everything was built back in 1995.
