BCS Coordinator Michael Slive and the Mitchell Report Headline This Weekend's Edition of SBR
Fri, 2007-12-14 18:05 — Berger
In the four years that I've hosted Sports Business Radio, I can't recall a week where we've had more information packed into a show than we'll tackle this week. If you don't learn at least five new things while listening to our show this weekend, then you're not paying attention.
In our headlines segment, we'll discuss two of 2007's biggest sports business stories. And both stories unfolded this week - the release of the Mitchell Report and the sentencing of NFL star Michael Vick. I've got lots of thoughts on both of these topics and we'll cover these stories from angles that aren't being covered by most media outlets.
We also have three guests joining us on this weekend's show. Michael Slive, the coordnator of the always debated BCS and the Commissioner of the SEC will join us. Everyone seems to have an opinion on the BCS and whether its a good thing or a bad thing for college football. I'll ask Slive, who is serving his last few months as the BCS Coordinator before handing over the reigns to the rotating role to ACC Commissioner John Swofford, if there are any plans to change the format of the BCS or abandon the current system altogether in favor of a playoff system. For the record, I'm a proponent of a playoff system like this one.
Slive's Southeastern Conference (SEC) has enjoyed a remarkable year. The Florida Gators won the Men's College Basketball Championship and the BCS National Championship in football, the Tennessee Lady Vols won the Women's College Basketball Championship and Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow just became the first sophmore to ever win the Heisman Trophy. LSU is playing in the BCS Championship game on January 7th. Not a bad year at all.
We're only a few weeks away from kicking off the 2008 PGA season with the first tournament of the year - the Mercedes Benz Championship in Kapalua, Maui. Kapalua's Plantation Course, where they play this event, is my favorite golf course on earth. Gary Planos, the Tournament Chairman of the Mercedes Benz Championship, will join us this weekend to help us preview the winner's-only event with a $5.5M total purse and a $1.1M winner's purse. Golfers scheduled to play in the event include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and defending champ Vijay Singh.
If the pros are lucky, they'll be able to stick it as close as I did when I last played the course in September of 2006 (shot of my life!).
If you're looking for last minute holiday gift ideas, we'll even help you out there on this weekend's show. Linda Choong, the Senior Vice President of Retail for the NBA will join us to discuss the re-launch of NBAStore.com and give you some great ideas for the NBA fan you may be shopping for.
And a friendly reminder that we'll devote our last two shows of 2007 to reviewing our "Top 20 Sports Business Radio Stories of 2007". The weekend of December 22-23 we'll review stories 20-11 and then the weekend of December 29-30 we'll review stories 10-1.
Talk to you this weekend!
