Monday Morning Musings....

Hope you had a good weekend. I woke up to a blanket of snow covering the greater Portland area this morning so that was a pleasant surprise. Growing up in Arizona and living in Southern California for several years, I didn't see much snow before moving to Oregon.
A few thoughts and observations on this Monday morning:
- If you missed this past weekend's edition of Sports Business Radio and you want to catch the show via podcast, click here. CNBC's Darren Rovell joined me and we had some interesting analysis regarding the enormous business of Super Bowl XLII. And if you're wanting to see a healthy economy this year, you had better be rooting for the New York Giants based on the "Super Bowl Indicator" we discussed.
- Last week, Major League Baseball announced that the Dodgers and Padres will play in Beijing, China this March. This morning comes word from the San Diego Union-Tribune that the New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers will play on October 26th at Wembley Stadium in London. The game will mark only the second regular season contest to be played outside of North America. As I've been saying since I returned from China in September, the U.S. sports leagues are agressively seeking new fans and sponsorships in foreign countries. Leagues like the NBA, MLB and NFL know they are mostly healthy here in America. But cultivating a new audience in other parts of the world (mainly Europe and Asia) will be the number one priority over the next decade. That is where the growth is.
- Roger Clemens continues to make the case that he is clean in the court of public opinion. He's got a 44-page report out today showing you how. Two questions here. First, is anybody besides "Baseball Nerd" going to read this entire report and crunch the stats? Also, its written by his agents, so the report is going to be slanted. They should have hired an independent third party to do this report and it wouldn't have looked nearly as biased.
- Tiger Woods was DOMINANT this weekend winning the Buick Open by 8 shots. Now its off to Dubai for Tiger, where he will check in on one of his first golf course design projects. How'd you like to tee it up here? By the way, I liked the new apparel Nike outfitted Tiger in for this tournament. Good looking stuff. Tiger certainly looks primed to win all four Grand Slam events this year. If he can win the Masters in April, I think the other three majors set up very nicely for him.
- Very interesting read in the latest edition of Fast Company magazine about the battle between Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com. I bet you didn't know that Yahoosports.com beat "the worldwide leader" in unique visitors in August, September, and November 2007, according to comScore Media Metrix.
- Trail Blazers Super Soph Brandon Roy shows again why he should be named to the Western Conference All-Star team this week by the Western Conference coaches. He scores 24 points and leads the Trail Blazers back from a 19-point deficit to edge the Atlanta Hawks 94-93. What else does this guy have to do to make the All-Star team??!!
Enjoy your Monday!
