When Dale Earnhardt Jr. switched teams and major sponsors prior to this season, we told you to expect huge numbers from sales of his merchandise. Just like when Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett or Allen Iverson switch jersey numbers or teams, Dale Jr. fans will want a piece of Junior's new merchandise for their collection.
On February 15th adidas launched NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s new JR Nation signature apparel line and sales have been brisk to say the least. adidas tripled its sales numbers from the same day in 2007 according to ESPN.com.
Marty Smith of ESPN.com reported the apparel line eventually will expand to include $200 driving shoes like Earnhardt wears on race day, and even his racing suit, which will retail for $2,000, though that will not be available until mid-'09.
Earnhardt is just the fourth pro athlete to sign a signature deal with adidas. The other adidas athletes with signature lines include MLS LA Galaxy MF David Beckham, Rockets G Tracy McGrady and Saints RB Reggie Bush.
NASCAR has a loyal following and Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the sport's most popular driver. Junior will be a cash cow for adidas and his other sponsors for the forseeable future.
And more importantly for adidas, NASCAR fans who may have never purchased any adidas merchandise previously, will now be introduced to the brand via Dale Jr.
