As if Roger Clemens Didn't Already Have Enough Problems......

When I am not hosting Sports Business Radio, I media train athletes and executives for a living. One of the main things I advise my clients when they are embroiled in a scandal is to be honest and come clean right from the get go. In the 24/7 news cycle we live in, the more you run, the more the media will chase you. Often times the cover up is worse than the crime.
Case in point. Roger Clemens is named in the Mitchell Report last winter. So is his friend and former teammate Andy Pettitte. Clemens vehemently denies that he has ever used performance enhancing drugs. Pettitte, who worked out with Clemens and used the same trainer, Brian McNamee, admitted HGH use and came clean as soon as the Mitchell Report was issued. Pettitte apologized to the public for disappointing them.
Clemens continues to run. If he was really clean, wouldn't he make himself an open book? Invite everyone to check out his medical records and anything else they want to review in order to vindicate himself?
When you continue to run, the media continues to dig. Into your personal life, your tax filings and anything else where they might be able to catch you in a lie. If you lied about those things, then maybe you lied about taking PED's as well?
The New York Daily News is reporting that Clemens had a 10-year affair with country music star Mindy McCready. And the affair started when McCready was only 15. Yikes.
The fact that a pro athlete had an affair is not groundbreaking news. But the news that McCready was only 15 when the affair supposedly started and the fact that Clemens cheated on his wife are disturbing details.
When you are fighting for your image, these are the kinds of details that help sway the court of public opnion against you even further.
If I were advising Clemens, I'd advise him to come clean about his past mistakes as soon as possible. The longer he runs, the more the media will chase him and the more the media will likely dig up.
