Quiet week for 4th of July......
Mon, 2008-06-30 18:52 — Berger
Since this Friday is the 4th of July holiday, its going to be a quiet week on this blog - just forewarning you. We're also going to be bringing our national audience a "Best of Sports Business Radio" edition this weekend as we take the weekend off.
You'll hear my recent conversations with golf legend Jack Nicklaus, boxing champion and promoter Oscar De La Hoya and new Miami Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra. If you missed any of those conversations when they aired originially, I urge you to tune in this weekend and catch the encore presentation.
A few other things on my mind this Monday morning:
- Floyd Landis loses his doping appeal before sports' highest court. He spent millions trying to clear his name and save his Tour de France title and he's also got to pay $100,000 in legal fees to the Anti-Doping agency's lawyers. Ouch.
- Is it just me or has Wimbledon lost its appeal? With Sharapova, Roddick, Blake and Ivanovic all being eliminated, the event just doesn't seem very compelling to me. In fact tennis just isn't that compelling to me any more and I used to be a big tennis fan. John McEnroe should be the commissioner and inject some much needed life and order to the sport.
- Speaking of ho-hum, are you excited about the Olympic trials in track and field and swimming? I'm just not into the "Olympic spirit" yet, despite the fact that athletes like Tyson Gay and Michael Phelps are setting records.
- The Washington Wizards are reportedly offering Gilbert Arenas $100M over 6-years? I like the "Hibachi", but he is not a $100M player. And if Arenas signs for that kind of money, you can only imagine the type of money that LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh will command in 2010.
- How can a no-hitter not be a no-hitter? I've never heard anything like this.
- When is the last time anyone looked forward to a Tampa Bay Rays series? When is the last time they had a meaningful series this late into the season? I'm looking forward to watching the Rays take on the Red Sox this week and further determine superiority in the AL East. The Rays are for real, so the Red Sox and anyone else shouldn't sleep on these guys. And keep in mind that the Rays are doing this all with a payroll that is one of the lowest in all of MLB and only a fraction of what the Red Sox team payroll is.
A reminder that we'll be airing our LIVE two-hour edition of SBR on 95.5FM The Game this weekend in Portland. Then starting on Monday, July 7th, I'll be co-hosting the Morning Sports Page on The Game with Kenny Vance from 6:00am - 9:00am. I'm looking forward to sitting in with the MSP crew again. I'll be back with them at the end of July as well as I co-host with Kenny on Thursday, July 31st and Friday, August 1st.
Enjoy your holiday weekend!
