Sonics Oklahoma City bound

At the end of the day, the city of Seattle had their price. Just like everyone has their price. And the price to relocate the Sonics from Seattle to Oklahoma City was $75M. The city gets much more than the $26.5M Sonics owner Clay Bennett originally offered, but they lose their NBA team that has played in the Emerald City since 1967.

The only potential good news for Seattle basketball fans is that because the city of Seattle let the Sonics go to Oklahoma City, NBA Commissioner David Stern will likely move them to the top of the NBA's relocation list. In Stern's eyes the city cooperated and didn't put a gun to the Sonics heads for the next two years by forcing them to play out their lease at Key Arena.

For Oklahoma City and the Sonics's owners, its a landmark day. Durant, Green and Westbrook are headed to Oklahoma.

For the city of Seattle, they make $75M which is probably more than a judge would have awarded them. And the city of Seattle makes out like bandits while the businesses and people who were dependent on the Sonics for income will suffer.

The only kink in the Sonics plans is if Starbucks kingpin and former Sonics owner Howard Schultz and his lawsuit against the Sonics delays the move, which is highly doubtful.

The villans here are Howard Schultz, who sold the team to a group comprised completely of out-of-towners (he actually thought they'd keep the team in Washington??!!) and the city of Seattle (who eventually got the number they wanted to let the team walk - they sold out).

We'll discuss this in greater detail on this weekend's edition of Sports Business Radio.
