Trail Blazers President Larry Miller on Sports Business Radio

Portland Trail Blazers President Larry Miller joined me on Sunday's edition of Sports Business Radio on 95.5FM The Game in Portland. Amongst the topics we discussed:
- Miller's reflections on his first year on the job as President of the Trail Blazers
- Which billionaire has he had more contact with in his positions at Nike and with the Trail Blazers - Phil Knight or Paul Allen?
- Miller discussed the Trail Blazers' plans to market the team in Seattle now that the city is without an NBA team
- And last but not least, we discussed the latest with the Comcast Sportsnet negotiations. For the first time, I heard Miller admit that there is a clause in the contract with Comcast Sportsnet that allows the Trail Blazers to void the deal if the network doesn't reach a certain distribution level and the team feels the need to pull the plug. Obviously walking away from a reported $10M per year (the amount CSN is reportedly paying the Trail Blazers for their network deal) is not an easy decision, but if Comcast Sportsnet and the Trail Blazers don't get this network distributed to a wider audience soon, there will be plenty of angry people. At what point do the Trail Blazers try to strike a deal with Fox Sports Northwest? At least they have distribution on DirecTV and Comcast. The problem for the Trail Blazers is that FSN is not willing to pony up $10M a year.
I took several calls from listeners yesterday who said that they have called DirecTV and have spoken with operators about adding CSN to the lineup and the callers told me that the operators they spoke with had no clue about this battle. In other words, despite the fact that CSN is urging people to beat the drum with your local satellite or cable provider so you can receive this channel, your complaints are falling on deaf ears.

Overall, its an exciting time for the Trail Blazers organization. They're selling lots of tickets in a tough economy and the team looks to be headed for big things. But they need to get their TV deal figured out because the tougher it is to get a ticket, the more the need for people who can't get in to a game to watch on TV so they can follow the team and the Trail Blazers can continue to promote their brand and their players to people who can't get to a game in person.

Comcast Sports Net
As a Dish customer, I too have repeatedly contacted Dish asking them to add Comcast Sports Net.....only to be met with a blank sounding "who?"
Even when I submitted the request via email, I only received a generic form response.
One possible reason.....the cable companies and satellite companies are in the midst of HD wars....it's all about adding HD capacity and national HD channels, not what they perceive to be local or regional networks of limited interest.
Prior to teh HD push, it was easier to get carriers to add channels....didn't take too much bandwidth. But that's a thing of the past....it takes a LOT of bandwidth to add an HD network, and channel space is at a premium, especially Dish, which seems to have the worst luck when it comes to placing satellites in orbit.
