The New York Knicks traded Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph today clearing space for 2010 when Cavs superstar LeBron James becomes a free agent. The Knicks aquired Al Harrington for Crawford and Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley for Randolph. All three players the Knicks acquired come off the books in 2010 giving them the ability to offer LeBron James a max contract.
The Knicks join the Pistons, Heat, Nets and Grizzlies as the teams that currently have the most cap to offer James in 2010.
Check out team payrolls and how they set up for 2010 here.
In addition to James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will also become free agents in 2010.
Remember that teams who have the rights to these players now can offer a 6-year contract to retain their own player. So the Cavs, Heat and Raptors will have a distinct advantage by being able to offer up more money. Teams who don't have the rights can only offer a maximum 5-year deal.
Its two years away but 2010 is setting up to be one of the most important offseasons in NBA history.
