BCS Makes Sure Bowl Season is Meaningless

The Bowl matchups are set and we now know that Oklahoma will face Florida in the BCS National Championship game. While I think the game will be a good matchup, I have plenty of other thoughts regarding this bowl season:
- The BCS honchos tell us that the current system works because it makes every regular season game meangingful. If you lose one game, your title chances are in jeopordy - just ask Texas, USC and Alabama to name a few. But what this system has also done is render every bowl game other than the title game meaningless. If you're Texas, USC or Alabama besides playing for pride and a chance to improve your individual stock on national TV, are you motivated by the thought that you can chant, "We're #3, we're #3!" after your bowl win? The university Presidents love the BCS because the payout for BCS bowl games is much larger than the payout for a non-BCS game, and the Presidents will tell you that its just a wonderful experience for the student athletes and their fans to have the chance to travel to compete in a bowl game. Spare me.
- I am going to be very curious to see how many fans travel to watch their favorite team play this bowl season. With the economy slumping and the airlines doing nothing to lower their prices during these difficult times, how many fans will spend the money to travel? Ohio State is playing in the Fiesta Bowl yet again. Oregon is playing in the Holiday Bowl yet again. Will Oregon State fans want to travel to El Paso and the Sun Bowl when they had visions of going to Pasadena for the first time since 1964? I think the economy will play a major role in attendance at this year's bowl games and what you will likely see is a more agressive effort on behalf of the bowl organizers to sell tickets to the locals. There may even be scenarios where large blocks of tickets to these bowl games are given away in an effort to at least gain revenues from parking, concessions and merchandise.
- Will people in the east and the west care about Florida vs Oklahoma? My guess is there will be a nice audience tuning in to Fox to start the game, but if its another LSU vs Ohio State route like last year's matchup, the ratings will be dismal.
- I would have loved to have seen a USC vs Texas matchup in the Rose Bowl. Or an Alabama vs Texas matchup in the Sugar bowl. If motivated, USC should route Penn State and Texas should route Ohio State.
We'll discuss the BCS in more detail on this weekend's edition of SBR.
