Yesterday afternoon, Roger Clemens made his dramatic return to Major League Baseball by announcing during the 7th inning stretch at Yankee Stadium that he'll soon be returning to pitch for the New York Yankees. Clemens, who is 45 years old, will be paid a prorated salary of $28M for this season. That equates to about $4.5M per MONTH. As I wrote a few months ago, the New York Yankees, because of their desperate need for pitching and because owner George Steinbrenner has already invested $200M in the team payroll for this season, seemed to be the most logical destination for Clemens.
Roger Clemens turned 40 in 2002. Since that time, his average yearly salary has amounted to roughly $20M per season. Barry Bonds is 42 years old. During the last two seasons since he turned 40, he's been paid roughly $18M per season.
Its no secret that there have been whispers about performance enhancing drug use with both Bonds and Clemens. Neither player has tested positive to our knowledge though and since no test has yet been developed to detect Human Growth Hormone, we have no way of knowing if Bonds or Clemens or both are using HGH.
My point is this. If someone approached you and told you that you could make considerably MORE money if you chose to use a currently undetectable banned substance - millions of dollars more, what would you do?
Roger Clemens has made close to $100M in salary since turning 40. Barry Bonds has made close to $40M since turning 40. Seems both have found a "fountain of youth". Sure, athletes today keep themselves in better physical condition than they used to, but its pretty amazing to watch Bonds and Clemens actually get BETTER as they get older.
Have Bonds and Clemens been using performance enhancing drugs that have helped them prolong their careers? That we don't know (but we could find out soon if former Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski was selling PED's to either player - Radomski's client list will soon be made public). Have both players made a remarkable amount of money during the "twilight" of their careers when many players their age are just hanging on or retired? That answer is indisputable. The answer is a resounding "YES".
